She is the daughter of Beverly who was a housewife, and Thad an officer in the US Navy. She is the mother of a brother and three sisters. Her father was a trucker and the family moved often. They lived in various countries as well as Germany, Japan, Greece as well as other parts of the world. Harden settled in Maryland and was a student at Surrattsville High school in Clinton. She later attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a BA in theater in the year 1980. Harden was accepted into NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988 in order to obtain her MFA.
